The 'Greek FBI' has dismantled over 180 organized crime groups responsible for economic damage amounting to 364 million euros to victims and the state within its first 16 months of operation.
In its first 16 months, the newly established 'Greek FBI,' officially known as the Directorate for the Suppression of Organized Crime (DAOE), successfully dismantled more than 180 organized crime syndicates believed responsible for causing significant financial harm, estimated at around 364 million euros, to both public institutions and private victims.
The agency gathered substantial evidence and witness testimonies leading to 3,312 individuals facing charges, with 2,228 of them being brought to trial. Out of these, 618 were remanded in custody, showcasing the rigorous efforts being made by the agency to tackle serious criminal activity. The operation has also led to the seizure of valuable assets including 113 diamonds, 1,749 gold bars and coins, as well as 718 vehicles linked to these criminal organizations.
The DAOE’s scope of investigation encompasses a wide range of organized crime activities, from drug trafficking and human smuggling to armed groups, serial robbers, and forgers. The reported damage to citizens, the state, and law-abiding businesses alone reaches approximately 47.7 million euros, highlighting the substantial impact and reach of organized crime in Greece, and the urgent need for effective law enforcement measures such as those implemented by the DAOE.
