KEM submits a draft order for public discussion regarding the planned wind farm in Kuldīga municipality

The Ministry of Climate and Energy (KEM) has submitted a draft order for public discussion concerning the planned wind farm by SIA 'Eko ziemeļi' in Kuldīga municipality.

The Latvian Ministry of Climate and Energy (KEM) has initiated a public consultation on the draft order for a wind farm proposed by SIA 'Eko ziemeļi' in the Ēdole and Pādurē parishes of Kuldīga municipality. This decision comes in the wake of a new law that took effect on October 5, 2022, governing the construction of energy supply facilities essential for promoting energy security and independence, which requires final approval from the Cabinet of Ministers for wind farms exceeding 50 megawatts in capacity.

The project put forth by Eko ziemeļi has completed an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), a necessary procedure prior to moving forward with large-scale energy projects. The public consultation period for this wind farm project is open until February 27, 2026, allowing local residents and stakeholders ample time to provide feedback on the potential environmental and community impacts of the development.

This initiative by KEM highlights the government's ambition to diversify energy sources and enhance the sustainability of energy production in Latvia. As discussions progress, it will be crucial to balance economic development and the environmental concerns of the local populations involved, reflecting broader trends towards renewable energy transitions in Europe.
