Rio reaches heat level 3; maximum could hit 39°C
Rio de Janeiro has entered heat level 3 as temperatures are expected to peak at 39°C for several consecutive days.
Rio de Janeiro has officially moved into heat level 3 under the Heat Protocol as of Friday, the 13th, according to the Alerta Rio System. The heat index, which combines temperature and humidity, is expected to remain high, with temperatures ranging between 36°C and 40°C for at least three consecutive days. The forecast predicts stable weather with intense heat throughout the day, with a maximum temperature of 39°C, and the heat index remaining in the high range for roughly 5 hours.
As the city enters level 3 of the heat protocol, residents are advised to take precautions to protect themselves from the intense heat. Recommendations include increasing fluid intake, particularly through water or fresh fruit juices without added sugar, even if there is no thirst; consuming light foods such as fruits and salads; and wearing light, breathable clothing. Furthermore, individuals are urged to avoid alcoholic and high-sugar beverages, as well as minimizing direct sun exposure, especially between the hours of 10 AM and 4 PM.
Despite this escalation in heat protocol, the operational stage of the city remains at level 2. This means that while precautions are being heightened, city operations continue typically, highlighting ongoing efforts to manage the heat's impact while ensuring public safety through awareness and advisories on how to cope with the heat safely.
