2 Nigerians fighting for Russia found dead in Luhansk after drone strike

Two Nigerians who were fighting for Russian forces in Ukraine have been found dead in Luhansk following a drone strike.

The bodies of two Nigerian nationals, Hamzat Kazeen Kolawole and Mbah Stephen Udoka, were recently discovered in Luhansk, eastern Ukraine. According to Ukraine’s Main Directorate of Intelligence, both men were part of the 423rd Guards Motor Rifle Regiment serving in the Russian military. They had signed contracts to join the Russian forces in the latter half of 2025, with no prior military training reported. Kolawole is noted to leave behind a wife and three children in Nigeria.

The intelligence reports indicate that Kolawole and Udoka were killed during a mission in late November aimed at storming Ukrainian defensive positions in Luhansk. Interestingly, the men did not participate in any direct combat; instead, they were reportedly eliminated by a drone strike before they could engage in firefighting. This incident highlights the ongoing conflict in the region and raises concerns over Russia's recruitment of foreign nationals, including many from Africa, which has become a notable aspect of the international dimension of the war.

As the situation develops, this particular incident underscores the geopolitical complexities of the Ukraine conflict, especially the involvement of foreign fighters in the war, which further complicates diplomatic relations and public perception. The deaths of Kolawole and Udoka, who enlisted for a Russian regiment, reflects not only the personal tragedies involved but also the broader implications of mercenary warfare and how international conflicts draw in individuals from varied backgrounds, raising questions about their motivations and the dire circumstances that lead to such choices.
