The term 'Tawaif' became a problem, now villagers will proudly tell the name of their village

A village in Uttar Pradesh has changed its name from Roopwar Tawaif to Devpur to eliminate the social stigma associated with the original name.

In a significant and positive development, the village located in the Ballia district of Uttar Pradesh has officially changed its name from Roopwar Tawaif to Devpur. For decades, villagers faced social embarrassment due to the term 'Tawaif' in their village name, which led to difficulties for youths, particularly while applying for jobs or marriages. Students who moved away for education often felt uncomfortable when their village name was mentioned, leading to adverse social consequences and deterioration in relationships.

Last week, Aaj Tak highlighted the struggles of the villagers, bringing attention to their long-standing grievances with the name. Following this report, local administration responded promptly; a team of officials visited the village under government directives. A meeting was convened with the presence of the Block Development Officer, village head, and other authorities where the villagers collectively agreed to propose a new name for their village.

In the meeting, it was unanimously decided that the village would henceforth be known as Devpur. This proposal is now being sent to the government for final approval. The villagers expressed immense happiness and relief at shedding the old name and are hopeful that the new identity will enhance their social dignity and ease future interactions, fostering a sense of pride and belonging among the residents of Devpur.
