J. Olekas outlined conditions for Belarus to renew the transit of potassium fertilizers
Lithuanian politician J. Olekas presented conditions that Belarus must meet to resume potassium fertilizer transit, emphasizing the need for significant political reforms in the country.
In a recent appearance on 'Lietuvos ryto' television, Lithuanian parliament speaker J. Olekas articulated key conditions for Belarus to fulfill in order to facilitate the resumption of potassium fertilizer transit. These conditions include addressing significant issues such as ending interference with Lithuanian civil aviation, returning confiscated vehicles, and supporting the release of political prisoners held by the Belarusian regime. Olekas expressed that major reforms are essential for fostering a more constructive relationship with Belarus, contingent on their responsiveness to democratic principles and human rights concerns.
Olekas emphasized that the cessation of Russian aggression in Ukraine could potentially lead to improved economic relations with Belarus, but this is conditional upon the fulfillment of specific prerequisites he outlined. These measures reflect Lithuania's broader stance on maintaining pressure on Belarus's regime through sanctions and strategic diplomatic channels. The parliament speaker noted the importance of solidarity with the democratic forces in Belarus, highlighting Lithuania's commitment to supporting human rights and political freedoms in the region.
Until the conditions are met, Olekas insisted that Lithuania, alongside its partners, must continue to exert pressure on the Belarusian government using all available means, including sanctions and further restrictions. The focus remains on assessing the effectiveness of these measures while working towards the restoration of democratic governance in Belarus, which will be critical for any future cooperation regarding economic activities such as fertilizer transit.
