When does the environmental contingency end in CdMx and Edomex? This is what the authorities say

Authorities addressed uncertainty regarding the end of the environmental contingency affecting the Mexico City Metropolitan Area due to elevated pollution levels.

The activation of an environmental contingency in the Mexico City Metropolitan Area (ZMVM) has raised concerns regarding public health and mobility, especially in relation to the Hoy No Circula program designed to reduce vehicle emissions. Authorities have issued alerts due to high levels of ozone pollution, prompting a need for the public to stay informed about the potential impacts on their health. As the situation develops, citizens are advised to monitor updates regarding air quality and mobility restrictions.

The authorities overseeing the environmental measures, specifically the Commission for the Environmental Protection of the Megalopolis (CAMe), have clarified that the termination of these environmental measures is not predetermined. Instead, it is entirely contingent upon the chemical evolution of the atmosphere, which is influenced by various environmental factors such as weather patterns and pollution levels. Two key criteria must be met for the suspension of an Environmental Contingency (Phase I or higher): a decrease in contaminant levels and favorable weather forecasts.

As of now, the ZMVM is under Phase I of the ozone atmospheric contingency, reflecting the ongoing challenges faced by urban areas in managing air quality. As pollution rises due to various factors, including increased vehicular activity and industrial emissions, effective measures and public compliance are crucial to mitigate health risks. Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and adhere to the regulations in place until the situation improves and normalcy can be restored.
