"No involvement from other staff" - Aichi/Yatomi Mayor apologizes over bid-related information leak incident

The mayor of Yatomi City, Aichi Prefecture, apologized for a leak of bid information connected to a public works project amidst ongoing investigations.

In a press conference held on the 13th, Yatomi City Mayor Masaaki Ando issued an apology regarding a leak of information related to public works contracts, stating, "I deeply apologize for the inconvenience and concern caused." This follows the arrest of the city's construction department head, Takashi Tateishi, on suspicions of violating the Anti-Monopoly Act, particularly regarding bid rigging. The police investigation revealed that Tateishi was involved in 979 contracts since his appointment in April 2023. Although multiple officials are being questioned by the police, the city maintains there is no other staff involvement in the incident.

The charges against Tateishi relate to allegations that he disclosed design amounts to construction firms during the bidding process for three public infrastructure renovation projects between May and June last year, leading to winning bids at 97-99% of the estimated price, predominantly won by local contractors. Yatomi City first learned of the allegations on November 20, prompted by police notification about the ongoing investigation into Tateishi and was told to refrain from conducting its own inquiry.
