"Independent Suppliers" from Nevada Brothel Want Their Own Unions

Sex workers at one of Nevada's oldest brothels are attempting to establish a union, marking a historic move towards labor rights within the industry.

In a groundbreaking initiative, sex workers at Sheri's Ranch, one of the oldest brothels located in Nevada, are advocating for the formation of a union, becoming the first group of these workers to pursue such an organization in the U.S. state known for the legality of sex work. The push for unionization comes as the workers seek basic labor rights similar to those expected in other professions, including a safe working environment and mutual respect. In a recent statement, a worker identified by her pseudonym, Jupiter Jetson, emphasized the need for workers to have control over their representation and employment conditions.

The motivation behind the move to unionize emerged following the introduction of a new contract designating sex workers as independent contractors. This classification raised significant concerns, particularly regarding the potential exploitation of workers' images without their consent, which could allow the brothel to use the likeness of women who no longer worked there. Jetson voiced that such practices highlighted the precarious employment status of sex workers and underscored the urgent need for legal protections to ensure their rights and dignity in the workplace.

The petition for union recognition submitted to the National Labor Relations Board by most of the 74 sex workers at the brothel reflects broader conversations about labor rights, safety, and respect for sex workers across the United States. As Nevada stands as the only U.S. state where sex work is legalized, the outcome of this unionization effort could set pivotal precedents influencing discussions about worker rights and regulations within the sex industry not only there but potentially in other states as well.
