The largest is missing from the herd: Korkeasaari's elderly Abu the camel has been euthanized

Abu, a 17-year-old Bactrian camel at Korkeasaari Zoo in Finland, has been euthanized due to health issues.

Abu, the elderly Bactrian camel at Korkeasaari Zoo, was recently euthanized after his health deteriorated significantly. Officials from the zoo reported that staff had been monitoring Abu's health since the summer, noting troubling signs such as the shedding of his winter coat earlier than expected. Despite efforts to alleviate his health problems with medication, Abu's condition continued to worsen, ultimately leading to the decision to put him down this week.

Korkeasaari Zoo's communication expert, Mari Lehmonen, shared that Abu was approaching his 18th birthday in April, which is considered relatively old for male camels, with the average lifespan reported to be between 16-18 years. Abu’s lengthy lifespan was marked by various health issues typical of aging camels. The zoo's staff did their best to enhance his quality of life during his last days, providing specialized care tailored to his changing needs.

The news of Abu's passing highlights not only the challenges of providing care for aging zoo animals but also sheds light on the importance of their welfare. Additional insights regarding Abu's health will be obtained from pathological studies. This incident underscores the need for continued research and humane practices in zoos, balancing conservation efforts with the well-being of the animals in their care.
