Increase of Five Cents in the Daily Allowance for Conscripted Soldiers – View the Amounts

The daily allowance for conscripted soldiers in Finland has been raised by five cents, a change that has garnered criticism from the Union of Conscripts for being inadequate.

As of February 1, 2023, the daily allowance for conscripted soldiers in Finland has been increased by five cents, an adjustment that has stirred dissatisfaction among the Union of Conscripts. The increment, which is based on the consumer price index, is seen by the union as a trivial modification that fails to address the financial challenges faced by soldiers during their service. They are calling for a more substantial raise to better support the soldiers' needs.

For 2025, the daily allowance for conscripts has been set at 6.10 euros for the first 165 days, increasing to 6.15 euros in 2026. For days 166 to 255, the allowance has risen from 10.15 euros to 10.20 euros, and from 256 to 347 days, it has increased from 14.15 euros to 14.25 euros. The Union of Conscripts, represented by Mats Uotila, has expressed concern that even with this raise, many conscripts will still struggle financially, often relying on personal savings, parental support, or even incurring debt to cover living expenses during their service.

The situation is particularly striking when compared to other countries in the Nordic region, where conscripts receive a higher daily allowance. Uotila highlighted the absurdity of a situation where a prisoner serving time in an open prison can earn more than a conscript serving the nation. This discrepancy raises questions about the value placed on military service and the financial realities faced by those in uniform, prompting a broader discussion about military compensation in Finland and its adequacy in providing for the needs of service members.
