Here it comes again – The winter holiday has an unfortunate downside: "It shows quite clearly"

The winter holiday season in Finland brings an increase in wrist injuries, particularly from skiing and snowboarding accidents.

As winter holidays approach, many in Finland are looking forward to hitting the slopes. However, this popular season also carries a significant risk, especially concerning wrist injuries. According to Pohjola Insurance, hundreds of wrist fractures occur each week during this holiday period, contributing to a total of approximately 12,000 adult wrist fractures reported annually in the country. These injuries predominantly arise as individuals fall during skiing or slip unexpectedly on icy walkways.

Raija Nikander, the head of personal injury services at Pohjola, explains that the wrist is the first part of the body to absorb the impact of a fall. As such, the frequency of incidents dramatically increases during the winter vacation weeks, particularly in January and February. The statistics indicate that these months see a rise in accidents, particularly around the first few days of skiing, when participants may not yet be accustomed to the activity or the conditions.

Understanding this trend holds vital implications for both winter sports enthusiasts and health services in Finland. The spike in injuries not only affects individual holiday experiences but also places a burden on medical services. Increased awareness and preparation, such as warming up before skiing or being cautious on slippery surfaces, could mitigate some of these risks as people prepare for the winter season.
