Somalia: UK Announces £6m Humanitarian Drought Response Funding to Somalia
The UK has pledged £6 million in humanitarian funding to Somalia in response to the escalating drought crisis during a visit by International Development Minister Baroness Jenny Chapman.
Baroness Jenny Chapman, the UK's Minister for International Development and Africa, recently visited Somalia where she announced £6 million in humanitarian funding directed at addressing the worsening drought impacting the country. During her visit, she was received by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud at Villa Somalia, and the discussions primarily revolved around the drastic effects of the prolonged drought on Somalia's vulnerable populations. This funding aims to alleviate immediate needs and support long-term resilience against climate-induced shocks.
The UK is changing its approach from traditional donor assistance to a more investment-oriented partnership focused on enhancing development in Somalia. This involves building economic opportunities and long-term solutions for affected communities to mitigate their vulnerability to future climate-related challenges. Baroness Chapman emphasized that the partnership aims to create a sustainable response to the recurring issues caused by drought and other environmental factors.
Additionally, the UK Minister acknowledged the vital role of the Federal Government of Somalia in coordinating drought response efforts. The ongoing collaboration between the UK and the FGS aims to ensure an effective and timely response to the critical humanitarian needs of the population and to strengthen the overall response mechanisms to manage climate adversities more effectively.
