Bolek Polívka's play Angel in Alcohol is a tribute to actor Pecha. Premiering in Prague on Friday

The new play 'Angel in Alcohol' by Bolek Polívka premieres in Prague as a tribute to the late actor Jiří Pecha.

The Brno theater of Bolek Polívka will debut the play 'Angel in Alcohol' at the Bez zábradlí Theatre in Prague on February 13, marking its first presentation in the capital. The play honors Jiří Pecha, a celebrated actor who passed away in 2019, and had its world premiere in Brno at the end of January. This collaboration between the Bez zábradlí Theatre and the Bolek Polívka Theatre is the result of a newly agreed partnership that will see performances in both cities throughout the year.

In a personal twist, Bolek Polívka himself will portray Pecha's unique character in this production, while his son Vladimír will take on the role of Polívka in a remarkable family feature that showcases all four Polívka sons, including Jan and František, on stage together for the first time. This brings a heartfelt dynamic to the play as it connects the legacy of their craft with familial ties, reinforcing the theatre's communal spirit in celebrating the past.

The partnership marks a significant moment in the regional cultural scene, as it was established by founders Karel Heřmánek and Polívka, who were classmates at the Janáček Academy of Music and Performing Arts. After Heřmánek’s death in 2024, his widow, Hana Heřmánková, has taken the artistic leadership at the Prague venue, further strengthening the ties between the two theaters. This event heightens the anticipation surrounding the play among local audiences, adding emotional depth by honoring a beloved figure in Czech theatre.
