US Marine Corps members from Iwakuni Base charged for cash theft in Kabukicho, police said

Two US Marines stationed at Iwakuni Base have been charged with theft for stealing cash from restaurants in Tokyo's Kabukicho district.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Police have filed charges against two US Marines, aged 26 and 20, for the alleged burglary and theft of approximately 27,000 yen from two restaurants in Kabukicho, Tokyo. The incident occurred in the early morning hours of December 24, when the Marines reportedly broke into the establishments by tampering with a key box, using tools to gain entry. Both Marines acknowledged their involvement in the crime, citing personal financial difficulties as their motivation.

Police were alerted to the theft by restaurant staff who called emergency services, prompting an investigation that led to the identification of the two suspects. During interrogation, the 26-year-old Marine explained that he committed the theft to cover his family’s medical expenses, while the 20-year-old claimed he was motivated by the need for living expenses. This incident is part of a broader investigation as there was a separate theft of over 10 million yen from another restaurant in the same area on the same day, which police are currently exploring for possible connections.

These events raise concerns around the behavior of military personnel stationed in Japan and highlight the potential impact on local communities. The unauthorized actions of the Marines could affect diplomatic relations and community perceptions, particularly in areas with a significant military presence. As investigations continue, the implications of crime involving servicemen could foster tensions between the local population and military establishments.
