288 more missiles will come for the S-400, Pakistan's planes were shot down in Operation Sindoor

India's Defence Acquisition Council has approved the purchase of 288 S-400 surface-to-air missiles from Russia to strengthen its air defense capabilities, especially following the successful Operation Sindoor against Pakistan.

The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) in India has granted approval for the acquisition of 288 S-400 surface-to-air missiles from Russia, costing approximately โ‚น10,000 crore. This decision comes in the wake of the successful Operation Sindoor conducted in May 2025, where the Indian Air Force effectively neutralized Pakistani fighter jets, AWACS, and drones. The move is aimed at reinforcing Indiaโ€™s aerial defense capabilities amidst ongoing regional tensions.

The DAC has provided an Acceptance of Necessity (AoN), marking it as a significant first step in military procurement. The approval entails a Fast Track Procedure (FTP) to ensure expedited delivery of the missiles, which are crucial for replenishing and enhancing India's existing stock of S-400 systems. Prior to this, India had already secured a deal for five S-400 squadrons, with two more expected to arrive later in the year.

Operation Sindoor was notably conducted in response to a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, lasting from May 7 to May 10, 2025, and was described as one of the largest conflicts between India and Pakistan in decades. The success of this operation highlights the strategic importance of the S-400 systems in India's defense strategy, particularly in light of the challenges posed by its neighboring countries.
