Why do armed men rage in this country year after year? We called Nigeria and asked.

Armed attacks in Nigeria resulted in the deaths of at least 162 people in a single day, highlighting the ongoing security crisis in the country.

On a shocking Tuesday in Nairobi, armed militants killed at least 162 individuals in Nigeria's western region, as reported by local authorities. These assailants are linked to an extremist Islamist group which had previously sent a letter to local leadership indicating their intention to visit the Muslim-majority village for preaching. Residents, however, rejected their presence, which prompted local leader Umar Bio Salihu to alert security services, but unfortunately, this led to a brutal massacre.

The violence did not stop there; on the same day, attacks continued across Nigeria with 21 people killed in the northern part of the country, while 17 more lost their lives in several different assaults in the northeast. This wave of violence in just one day underscores the severity of the security crisis plaguing Nigeria, with armed groups acting with impunity across various regions.

Human rights organization Amnesty International issued a warning on Sunday, stating that Nigeria's security crisis is worsening and spiraling out of control, raising significant concerns about the safety of civilians. This alarming trend reflects a deeply rooted problem with extremist violence, and the failure of the authorities to effectively contain these groups exacerbates the situation, calling for urgent local and international responses to restore peace in affected regions.
