Court rejects Raimondas Kurlianskis' appeal for conditional release, he remains behind bars

A court in Lithuania has upheld a decision denying conditional release to Raimondas Kurlianskis, citing insufficient evidence of his rehabilitation.

On Friday, a Lithuanian court announced that it would uphold the ruling made by the Kaunas District Court on January 16, which rejected the conditional release request of Raimondas Kurlianskis by the Conditional Release Commission. Despite Kurlianskis exhibiting good behavior during his incarceration, maintaining social contacts, and being transferred to an open-type facility, the panel of judges determined that these factors alone were not adequate to conclude that the goals of his sentence had been met.

The court highlighted that Kurlianskis' involvement in the resocialization process was still insufficient and that his attitude towards his criminal actions appeared formal, with a tendency to justify his behavior. These factors led the court to decide that it was necessary to continue isolating him from society, as further correction of his conduct could not be achieved without confinement. This ruling becomes effective immediately and is not subject to appeal.

Additionally, the court emphasized that conditional release is not an automatic right — even in cases where there is a low risk of reoffending, every situation must be evaluated on its own merits. As such, the decision reflects the judicial system's approach to balancing rehabilitation efforts with public safety considerations.
