Customs officials discovered cigarette hiding places set up in a Belarusian bus

Lithuanian customs officials discovered a significant amount of contraband cigarettes hidden within a bus arriving from Belarus.

On Tuesday, customs officials at the Medininkai border checkpoint inspected a 'Yutong' bus that had entered Lithuania from Belarus. The bus was carrying only seven passengers, which raised suspicions because typically these buses are filled to capacity. Consequently, the officials decided to conduct a detailed examination of the vehicle. During the inspection, officers discovered hidden compartments in the driver’s sleeping area containing contraband cigarettes.

Upon further investigation using an X-ray system, additional hiding spots were identified in various areas of the bus, including the floor, ceilings, and other structural cavities. In total, 2,500 packs of 'NZ Gold' cigarettes were uncovered, valued at approximately €12,400 including taxes. The discovery prompted an immediate investigation by the Vilnius division of the Customs Criminal Service (MKT) into the case of smuggling.

Both drivers of the bus, who are Belarusian nationals, were detained. Following their arrest, a local court in Vilnius imposed preventive measures upon them, indicating the seriousness of the offense. This case highlights ongoing issues related to cigarette smuggling from Belarus to Lithuania, as border authorities intensify their efforts to combat such illegal activities.
