[Breaking] The Ethics Committee of the People Power Party Issues a Severe Punishment of 'One Year Suspension of Party Membership' to the Close Associate Bae Hyun-jin
The People Power Party's Ethics Committee has imposed a one-year suspension of party membership on lawmaker Bae Hyun-jin for spreading defamatory remarks about former President Yoon Seok-yeol and for other misconducts.
On the 13th of the month, the Central Ethics Committee of the People Power Party decided to impose a one-year suspension of party membership on lawmaker Bae Hyun-jin, who is known to be close to the faction of former Justice Minister Han Dong-hoon. The decision stems from accusations that Bae made defamatory statements about former President Yoon Seok-yeol and his spouse, mocked Representative Jang Dong-hyuk's hunger strike, and posted photographs of minor children on social media.
Although the suspension of party membership will not affect Bae's status as a member of the National Assembly, it will prevent her from participating in local election candidacy decisions as the head of the Seoul Chapter, a role that carries significant political influence. The party's disciplinary actions vary from expulsion, recommendation to resign, suspension of membership, to warnings, and Bae's case falls into the more severe category of suspension, raising questions about internal party dynamics and future conflicts regarding candidacy.
If Bae chooses to appeal the suspension, she has ten days from the notification of the ruling to request a review from the Committee. Should the suspension be upheld, she will lose her role as the head of the Seoul Chapter, heightening the tensions within the party surrounding candidate nominations in the upcoming elections. The chairman of the Seoul Chapter could either be represented by the senior vice-chairman or appointed by the party leader as an acting manager, indicating possible shifts in power within the party's ranks.
