Instances of Losing Contact with Mainland China Quadrupled; Taiwanese Authorities Issue Risk Warning

Taiwanese authorities have reported a fourfold increase in cases of individuals losing contact with the mainland China, urging caution for any travel to the region.

On December 12, Chiu Chui-Cheng, the head of Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council, revealed that the number of individuals traveling from Taiwan to mainland China who subsequently lost contact or faced interrogations and restrictions had reached 221 in 2025, a fourfold increase from 55 in the previous year. The report highlighted that from January 2024 onwards, 296 such cases have been recorded, including 102 instances of lost contact, 25 who faced interrogations, and 169 who encountered operational restrictions. Notably, among these cases, eleven individuals belonging to a certain religion remain stranded in China and have not returned to Taiwan yet.
