Safety of the parking garage needed improvement – now speaks the CEO

The CEO of a Helsinki parking garage discusses ongoing safety improvements in the wake of multiple fatal incidents.

Mikko Syrjänen, the CEO of the parking garage located on Bahamakatu in Jätkäsaari, Helsinki, has confirmed that safety measures intended to enhance the facility's security are still in the planning stages. This announcement comes after a tragic incident late Thursday night, where a person fell from the roof of the parking garage and died, marking the fourth fatality at this location. Previous incidents included the deaths of two young girls who fell from the same roof in July and another fatality in October, all of which have not been linked to foul play.

In response to these repeated fatalities, there were expectations to implement safety improvements at the parking garage. Syrjänen informed Ilta-Sanomat that cost assessments for these safety measures are still ongoing. The planned improvements focus on structural changes to the garage's exterior and the roof structures of the upper parking levels, which are deemed essential to prevent further tragedies. However, the implementation of these safety upgrades has been delayed due to winter weather conditions.

Syrjänen emphasized the complexity and scale of the required changes, stating that significant modifications would not have been feasible prior to winter. As the planning advances, the management hopes to prioritize the safety of users at the parking garage to prevent any future incidents, indicating a responsive but delayed reaction to a series of unfortunate events that have sparked public concern about the facility's safety measures.
