Molotov and sabotage on the trains of the Games. The prosecution investigates terrorist acts
Investigations are underway into anarchist sabotage targeting train lines leading to the Olympic venues in Italy.
Recent attacks on railway lines in Italy, particularly in Bologna and Pesaro, have been linked to similar sabotage incidents during the Olympics in Paris two years ago. The ongoing pattern indicates that oppositional groups may still have the Games in their sights as potential targets. This connection is largely based on claims made in various blogs that celebrate these acts of vandalism and disruption, suggesting a wider coordinated effort against the Olympics.
In addition to the attacks in Bologna and Pesaro, an alleged act of sabotage occurred on the Lecco-Tirano train route, crucial for accessing ski resorts central to the Olympic events. A fire resulted in the discovery of burned cables and manipulated steel cables, signalling an intention to disrupt services, although there were no significant impacts on train operations. These incidents have prompted a serious investigative response, leading to the opening of two separate investigations—one focusing on terrorism by the Milan Prosecutor's office, and the other on potential railway disaster risks by the Lecco Prosecutor's office.
The investigations highlight the ongoing tension between law enforcement and extremist groups opposed to the Olympics, and the success or failure of these efforts may have broader implications for security at international events. Ensuring the safety and smooth operation of transportation infrastructure during the Games is becoming increasingly critical, with the threat of anarchistic sabotage looming over the proceedings, drawing attention from authorities and security agencies worldwide.
