We want to be close to Mexico: EU Ambassador
The EU Ambassador to Mexico expresses the importance of renewing the free trade agreement between Mexico and the EU, which is expected to eliminate nearly all tariffs between the two parties by mid-year.
The renewal of the free trade agreement between Mexico and the European Union is anticipated to be signed by mid-year, aiming to eliminate nearly 100% of tariffs on trade between the two regions. EU Ambassador Francisco André emphasized that this agreement reflects a shared intent to strengthen ties in light of global uncertainty. He highlighted the historical significance of this partnership, which commenced in 2000, noting that it is one of the oldest strategic alliances in the Americas.
In his remarks during the presentation of the 29th edition of Eurojazz at the National Center for the Arts (Cenart), Ambassador André pointed out that the EU has already invested approximately 230 billion euros in Mexico, leading to the creation of around six million jobs, both directly and indirectly. This substantial investment underscores the EU's status as Mexico's second largest investor, as well as its position as the second-largest destination for Mexican exports.
As the renewal of the trade agreement progresses, the EU aims to solidify its economic partnership with Mexico further, fostering an environment that enhances mutual cooperation and trade. Such a partnership is crucial not only for economic vitality but also in addressing broader global challenges, signifying that both regions are committed to deepening their collaboration on various fronts.
