Prosecution: The management of Latvijas dzelzceļš caused 1.5 million euro losses to the state

Four former board members of Latvijas dzelzceļš face accusations of abusing their official positions, resulting in significant financial losses to the state.

In a closed court session held at the Courteous District Court in Saldus, the final words will be delivered by four former board members of VAS "Latvijas dzelzceļš" (LDz), who are accused of abusing their official positions for personal gain. Among those accused is Uģis Magonis, a former head of the company. This session is a crucial step before the court reaches a verdict. Although court debates have taken place, the prosecutor has not disclosed what penalties are being sought for the accused individuals.

The defendants, including Magonis, Edvīns Bērziņš, Aivars Strakšas, and Ēriks Šmuksts, are facing serious charges that allege the misuse of their official positions which resulted in significant financial harm to the state, amounting to more than 1.5 million euros. The prosecution has indicated that the coordination of their actions led to the establishment of a new executive body, the President's Council, which improperly transferred rights and obligations that should have belonged to the board.

This case illustrates serious accountability issues within state-owned enterprises in Latvia. The outcome may not only affect the accused individuals but could also prompt broader discussions on governance and ethical standards in public service, potentially leading to reforms within the management structures of public enterprises. The magnitude of the alleged financial loss underscores the need for stringent oversight and regulatory measures to prevent future incidents of malfeasance in the public sector.
