The ongoing energy crisis, exacerbated by the Russian invasion of Ukraine, has plunged many households in the Czech Republic into a state known as energy poverty, where they cannot afford basic energy needs. Despite some immediate effects easing over time, a significant portion of the population continues to be impacted by rising energy costs and insufficient governmental support. The research led by Hedvika Koďousková from Masaryk University focuses on mapping energy vulnerability across more than six thousand Czech municipalities, explicitly addressing how such vulnerabilities manifest in different regions.
The research team has created a comprehensive map that outlines highly vulnerable regions and potential 'islands of security' within the country. The aim of the study is not only to identify where energy vulnerability occurs, but also to understand the underlying reasons for these disparities.
