Nigeria: No Negotiation With Makinde Over VP Ticket - Atiku

Atiku Abubakar refutes claims of negotiating a vice-presidential ticket with Governor Seyi Makinde, labeling rumors as political gossip.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has responded to claims made by Peter Ayodele Fayose, a former governor of Ekiti state, who suggested that there were negotiations regarding a vice-presidential ticket with Oyo state Governor Seyi Makinde. In a recent statement, Atiku dismissed Fayose's remarks as mere political gossip and emphasized that he never engaged in any negotiations regarding such a ticket. Atiku's comments come amidst ongoing political maneuvering in Nigeria as candidates position themselves ahead of upcoming elections.

During his visit to the residence of former military leader Ibrahim Babangida, Atiku stated unequivocally that discussions about a vice-presidential slot were nonexistent. He further criticized Fayose's assertions as fabricated and lacking any factual basis, urging the public to disregard what he termed "beer parlour tales of infamy." This denial illustrates the often contentious atmosphere in Nigerian politics, where misinformation and speculation can influence public perception and political alignments.

Atiku's Public Communication aide, Phrank Shaibu, reiterated his boss's stance, condemning Fayose's claims as laughable and indicating that Atiku is focused on more pressing issues rather than engaging in fictitious political negotiations. As Nigeria approaches a critical election period, such disputes highlight the importance of clear communication and the potential impact of political narratives on voter sentiment and party strategies.
