Mocidade Unida da Mooca honors Geledés at the São Paulo Carnival

Mocidade Unida da Mooca pays tribute to Geledés during its debut in the Special Group of the São Paulo Carnival.

Mocidade Unida da Mooca will honor Geledés - Institute of Black Women, in its debut at the Special Group of the São Paulo Carnival on Friday, the 13th, at the Anhembi Sambadrome. The samba school, which was the runner-up in the Access Group in 2025 with a theme inspired by writer and indigenous leader Ailton Krenak, is celebrating this year with the theme 'Gèlèdés – Agbara Obinrin', a tribute to the strength of Black women. Geledés director Natália de Sena Carneiro expressed surprise at the recognition, emphasizing that while Carnival and its schools are central expressions of Black Brazilian culture, opportunities for the Black women's movement to take center stage are rare.

Participating in the parade alongside other prominent figures such as writer Conceição Evaristo, philosopher and educator Helena Theodoro, and journalist Semayat Oliveira, Sueli Carneiro, Nilza Araci, and Lilian do Santos from Geledés' board will also be present. The announcement of the samba-enredo came on the 37th anniversary of the organization, which is a significant milestone. The recognition at Carnival not only shines a light on the contributions of Black women but also underscores the importance of their role in the broader narrative of Brazilian culture and history. This event may help elevate discussions around the representation and rights of women in the Afro-Brazilian community.
