Calgary companies secure more international trade deals amid U.S. uncertainty

Calgary-based companies are diversifying their trade agreements amid a decline in U.S. trade deals following tariffs imposed during President Trump's administration.

In 2025, trade deals between Calgary-based companies and the United States reached an all-time low due to tariffs introduced by former President Donald Trump, which has significantly impacted the trading relationships between Canada and the U.S. Data from Calgary Economic Development (CED) shows that less than 25% of the trade deals facilitated in 2025 were with U.S. partners, reflecting a decline from 35% in the previous year. This decline marks the smallest share of trade deals recorded for the organization. Brad Parry, the president of CED, emphasized that while the U.S. remains a vital trading partner, local companies are now looking to expand their operations in other global markets.
