Environmental contingency activated in Mexico City and State of Mexico TODAY | CAMe live reports
An environmental contingency was declared in Mexico City due to high ozone levels, reaching 155 ppb in Coyoacán, exacerbated by weather conditions.
The Environmental Commission of the Megalopolis reported that as of 4:00 PM today, an hourly maximum ozone concentration of 155 ppb was recorded at the Centro de Ciencias de la Atmósfera station in Coyoacán, Mexico City, prompting the activation of an environmental contingency. The situation indicates serious air quality concerns in the area, necessitating immediate action to protect public health.
Meteorological models suggested that the Valley of Mexico region, which has been under the influence of an anticyclonic system, was supposed to see reduced conditions today. However, these conditions intensified instead, resulting in strong atmospheric stability with minimal ventilation and humidity. The resulting weather led to clear skies and increased solar radiation, contributing to high temperatures reaching up to 28°C, which exacerbates the ozone formation.
The combination of these meteorological factors and pollutant concentrations has created hazardous air quality conditions, impacting residents’ health and prompting authorities to inform the public about staying indoors and minimizing outdoor activities. This alert signals ongoing environmental challenges that require both immediate attention and long-term strategies to improve air quality in the region, highlighting the need for public awareness and governmental response.
