Two disallowed goals do not stop US pressure – Latvia's hockey team begins Olympic tournament with a loss
Latvia's ice hockey team faced the United States in their Olympic tournament opener and suffered a loss despite a moment of hope with disallowed goals by the US.
Latvia's national ice hockey team opened its Olympic tournament against the United States, fielding Elvis Merzļikins as the goalie while Kristers Gudļevskis, Oskars Cibuļskis, and Roberts Bukarts were left out of the lineup. The match saw 18-year-old Albert Šmits debuting as the youngest player in Olympic hockey history. From the beginning of the match, the US team took control with a fast and physical style that suited the smaller Olympic rink.
In the sixth minute, Brady Tkachev scored for the US with a precise shot that hit the post, and just under two minutes later, Quinn Hughes extended their lead following a well-executed play. However, the second goal was disallowed after a challenge from Latvia's coaching staff led to the conclusion that the Americans entered the zone improperly. This moment briefly heightened hope for the Latvians as they sought to regroup and respond effectively to the on-ice pressure.
Despite the disallowed goal, Latvia struggled to contain the offensive pressure exerted by the US throughout the match and ultimately concluded with a loss, marking a challenging start to their Olympic journey. The match not only highlighted strengths in the US team’s performance but also revealed areas for improvement for Latvia as they proceed through the tournament, aiming to bounce back from this opening defeat.
