Gas leak affects supermarket and 12 employees hospitalized in Nova Odessa
A gas leak at the Pague Menos supermarket in Nova Odessa, Brazil, resulted in 12 employees being hospitalized for gas poisoning, with 11 already released from care.
In the morning of Thursday, October 12, a gas leak occurred at the Pague Menos supermarket located on Avenida Ampélio Gazzetta in Nova Odessa, SP, leading to the hospitalization of 12 employees due to symptoms of intoxication. According to the municipality's report, the employees were treated at the Municipal Hospital, with 11 of them receiving discharge while one remains under observation. Emergency services, including the Fire Department, responded promptly to the incident, sending two vehicles to manage the situation. Fortunately, the supermarket itself continued operating normally during the emergency. The leak was identified in the frozen storage area of the supermarket, prompting an immediate evacuation as a precautionary measure. Management of Pague Menos indicated that the bakery, where the employees were working, is in a separate building away from the customer service area. Therefore, the leak did not affect ongoing operations or customer access to the supermarket. Technicians have since been dispatched to undertake necessary repairs to ensure safety and prevent future incidents. This incident raises concerns about workplace safety in public establishments, particularly concerning the handling and management of gas installations. While the rapid response from emergency services and supermarket management helped mitigate potential consequences of the leak, it highlights the importance of regular safety inspections and training for employees to respond effectively in case of such emergencies.
