Mother and son are arrested on suspicion of drug trafficking at the family snack bar, police say
A mother and son were arrested for drug trafficking at their family snack bar in Palmas during a police operation targeting drug distribution ahead of Carnival.
On Thursday, a mother and her son were apprehended in a police operation known as Narcofolia, aimed at curbing drug distribution during the Carnival season in the northern region of Palmas, Brazil. The operation included a search warrant served at their family-run snack bar, where law enforcement uncovered a variety of illegal substances, including cocaine, crack, and marijuana, along with firearms and cash.
The mother, aged 61, and her son, 30, had their names withheld from the public due to the ongoing investigation. Notably, the mother has a history with law enforcement, having been incarcerated earlier in 2023 for similar trafficking allegations linked to the same establishment. The evidence seized during the raid included significant amounts of money, drug paraphernalia, and vehicles allegedly used for their illicit activities.
The police emphasized their commitment to tackling drug trafficking, particularly during high-traffic events like Carnival, which can see an uptick in illegal drug sales. Community concerns about the safety and integrity of local businesses are expected to rise following this incident, highlighting the challenges faced by law enforcement in maintaining public safety in areas where illegal activities intersect with family-run establishments.
