Drunk driver who crossed the channel and left a delivery rider seriously injured is convicted of bodily injury
A woman in Brazil has been convicted for causing serious injuries to a delivery rider while driving under the influence.
A Brazilian woman, Cassiane Aparecida Araújo Aires, has been convicted by the Court of Justice of Paraná for the serious bodily injury of a delivery rider, Mozart Pavoni, after she ran him over while driving drunk in Curitiba. The incident occurred in June 2021 at the intersection of Rua Nunes Machado and Avenida Sete de Setembro in the Rebouças neighborhood, where security cameras captured Cassiane driving onto a bus-only lane and over the sidewalk, striking Pavoni, who was completing his last delivery of the night. Following the accident, she did not stop to help Pavoni, who sustained 22 fractures and underwent eight surgeries due to his injuries.
In the sentencing by Judge Shaline Zeida Ohi Yamaguchi, Cassiane received a two-year prison sentence, which will be served in an open regime, meaning she may not serve time in a traditional prison environment. Additionally, her driver's license was suspended for over two months. The judge classified the crime as serious bodily injury with aggravating factors owing to her drunk driving, emphasizing that the crash could have been avoided had Cassiane adhered to traffic laws and refrained from driving under the influence. This case highlights the severe consequences of drunk driving and the legal ramifications for offenders, aiming to serve as a warning to others in similar situations.
This conviction not only reflects the legal system's stance against impaired driving but also raises awareness about road safety and the protection of vulnerable road users, such as delivery riders. As more people rely on food delivery services, the need for heightened responsibility among drivers becomes critical. The aftermath of this incident could lead to further advocacy for stricter regulations and public safety campaigns targeting drunk driving, which remains a significant issue in urban areas.
