According to Pevkur, Hungary is holding back tens of millions of euros intended for the defense of Estonia
Hungary is reportedly holding back tens of millions of euros meant to bolster Estonia's defense capabilities, according to Estonian Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur.
Estonian Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur has revealed that Hungary is delaying the release of significant European funding aimed at enhancing Estonia's defense capabilities, which amounts to tens of millions of euros. During a recent EU meeting in Brussels, Pevkur expressed that the issue was repeatedly brought up to Hungarian Defense Minister Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky, indicating a sense of urgency regarding the need for this funding, which is vital for national security.
Pevkur emphasized that the current blockade by Hungary is not merely a matter of withholding aid for Ukraine but is actively impeding the defense development of Estonia and other nations. This situation was highlighted during discussions with several ministers, and Pevkur noted the notable displeasure from the Hungarian minister, reflecting the strained relations within the EU regarding defense cooperation and funding allocation.
The Estonian minister also speculated that, given Hungary’s upcoming elections, it is unlikely a resolution will be reached before the polls. This delay raises concerns about the EU's collective defense posture and its ability to respond to emerging threats, as member states like Estonia seek to improve their military readiness. The ongoing situation underscores the complexities of inter-member relations within the EU and the politicization of defense funding.
