The Riigikogu will begin discussing the establishment of a ceiling for donations to political parties

The Riigikogu is set to discuss implementing a cap of 100,000 euros on donations to political parties, proposed by the Social Democratic Party to reduce dependency on wealthy donors.

The Riigikogu of Estonia is poised to discuss a proposal from the Social Democratic Party (SDE) that seeks to impose a ceiling of 100,000 euros on individual donations to political parties. This initiative aims to mitigate the influence of large financial contributors on political decision-making and reduce the dependence of parties on wealthy donors. Justice Minister Liisa Pakosta has indicated that the cap could possibly be set lower, presenting a point for further deliberation.

The proposal arises in light of concerns over the growing power of affluent individuals over political processes. Notably, during the last elections, it was reported that at least one political party received one million euros from a single donor, accounting for nearly half of its entire campaign expenditures. SDE faction leader Lauri Läänemets emphasized the global trend where political parties become increasingly reliant on substantial donations, leading to wealthy individuals potentially dictating national policies, which raises fairness issues in the political sphere.

Contrasting positions have emerged among political factions regarding the implications of this proposal. Lea Danilson-Järg from the Isamaa party voiced concerns that such a cap might exacerbate inequalities between opposition and coalition parties, as coalition parties typically receive more state funding. This concern highlights the delicate balance that must be struck between regulating party financing and ensuring free and fair competition among the political parties in Estonia.
