Hypersonica, an Anglo-German startup, has achieved a pivotal milestone in the development of the first European hypersonic missile, aiming for completion by 2029. The prototype, known as the "Scooter HS-1," successfully flew beyond Mach 6 with a range exceeding 300 kilometers during a test flight in Norway on February 3. This marks a significant advancement in hypersonic technology, responding to growing competition from Russian and Chinese military capabilities.

During the test, Hypersonica reported that all systems functioned correctly throughout the ascent and descent phases, validating performance down to individual subcomponents under hypersonic conditions. The single-stage launch vehicle was specifically designed to collect flight test experience, manage payload systems in hypersonic flight conditions, and gather sensor data for system validation and model calibration. The preparation for the test flight, encompassing concept, design, procurement, integration, and ground testing, was notably completed in just nine months.

The modular architecture of Hypersonica enables rapid iteration and adaptability, which is crucial as nations worldwide race to enhance their military capabilities in the realm of hypersonic weapons. The success of this test not only demonstrates Hypersonica's technological prowess but also positions Europe to become a significant player in the hypersonic missile domain, potentially counterbalancing advancements by adversaries.
