MP Gerretsen demands Kingston stop on proposed high-speed rail line
MP Mark Gerretsen is advocating for Kingston to be included in the proposed high-speed rail network connecting Quebec and Ontario.
Mark Gerretsen, the MP for Kingston and the Islands, has initiated a public campaign urging the inclusion of Kingston in the proposed Alto high-speed rail network that aims to connect Quebec and Ontario. In a video statement filmed at the city's historic downtown train station, he expressed his discontent with the current proposal, which he claims neglects Kingston and does not account for its significance as a transportation hub. Gerretsen highlighted that the proposed route includes seven stops, focusing on four locations in Quebec and three in Ontario, leaving Kingston completely out.
Gerretsen criticized the omission of Kingston as a significant oversight, stating that this exclusion undermines the city's importance in the regional rail network. He emphasized the need for a fourth Ontario stop near Kingston, arguing that such a stop would better serve the community and travelers. The MP pointed out that Kingston's current VIA Rail station ranks among the busiest in the country, suggesting a strong demand for additional rail service in the area.
By mobilizing public support and calling on the federal minister of transportation and the rail developer, Gerretsen aims to rectify what he perceives as an unfair and illogical decision. His campaign could not only improve local transport options for residents but also enhance Kingston's connectivity, supporting economic development and tourism. As discussions around the high-speed rail project continue, Gerretsen's advocacy highlights the importance of inclusive infrastructure planning in Ontario's transportation strategy.
