Animal infection at Prague Zoo: bird flu closes part of the area

Bird flu has been confirmed in deceased birds at Prague Zoo, prompting temporary closures and enhanced biosecurity measures.

The Czech State Veterinary Administration has confirmed the presence of bird flu in several deceased birds at Prague Zoo. Inspectors made this finding after the zoo reported a gradual death of various birds in certain exhibits. In light of this, veterinarians are collaborating with the zoo to implement emergency veterinary measures designed to prevent the spread of the infection, ensuring the safety of both animals and visitors.

As part of these emergency measures, the zoo has temporarily relocated birds from open outdoor exhibits to secure indoor areas to limit their exposure to potential infection. Furthermore, access to the affected sections of the zoo has been restricted; visitors are now prohibited from entering specific areas, particularly where the infection has been confirmed. Notably, the passage aviaries will be closed for an indefinite period, while some indoor pavilions remain open to the public due to their designs that mitigate transmission risk.

These actions highlight the zoo's commitment to animal welfare and public safety amidst an outbreak of avian influenza. Increased biosecurity protocols, such as testing deceased birds for bird flu and ramping up preventive care, are critical to managing the outbreak. This situation serves as a reminder of the ongoing risks associated with animal diseases and the importance of vigilance in wildlife management.
