European Parliament: Proposals for measures to eliminate poverty in the EU by 2035

The European Parliament has called for increased funding and coordination to combat poverty and social exclusion in the EU by 2035.

On Thursday, the European Parliament emphasized the urgent need for enhanced funding and better coordination in the fight against poverty and social exclusion within the EU. The Parliament's resolution, which garnered a majority support of 385 votes in favor, 141 against, and 53 abstentions, urges the European Commission to recognize poverty as a violation of human dignity in its upcoming strategy. Furthermore, lawmakers are advocating for adequate financial resources to be allocated for poverty alleviation measures within the EU’s long-term budget, alongside appropriate coordination efforts between the EU and its member states.

As child poverty continues to rise, the Parliament specifically highlighted the necessity of improved support for EU countries to implement the European child guarantee, which aims to ensure access to free healthcare, education, and adequate living conditions for all children. The increasing risk of child poverty has prompted lawmakers to call for urgent action to safeguard the wellbeing and future of vulnerable children, whose needs must be prioritized in national and EU policies.

Overall, these proposals reflect a growing recognition of poverty as not merely a social issue but a profound challenge to human dignity and social justice in the European Union. By striving for the eradication of poverty by 2035, the European Parliament is taking a significant step in mobilizing resources and policy frameworks that could reshape the future of millions, especially the younger generations who are disproportionately affected by economic disparities within EU member states.
