Ukrainian hackers gather data on Russian positions and Starlink terminals via Telegram

Ukrainian hackers have successfully gathered intelligence on Russian military positions and Starlink terminals through a Telegram operation, uncovering significant data that could aid Ukrainian forces.

The 256 Cyber Assault Division, together with InformNapalm and MILITAN, has launched a digital operation that extracted data on 2,420 Starlink terminals used by Russian forces and their frontline positions. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to leverage technological intelligence to counteract Russian military actions in Ukraine. The hackers additionally offered an intriguing tactic—encouraging Russian personnel to register their Starlink terminals in Ukraine, creatively turning a vulnerability against the enemy.

In this operation, which also netted nearly $6,000 in donations redirected towards the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the hackers managed to identify 31 Ukrainians who were allegedly collaborating with Russian forces. Their personal details have been shared with security agencies, indicating a dual approach not only aimed at gathering intelligence on Russian capabilities but also at countering local collaboration. Such actions underscore the ongoing cyber warfare component intimately linked to the larger conflict.

SpaceX's recent restrictions on Russian access to Starlink services have spurred an underground market within Ukraine, creating 'drops'—individuals willing to activate terminals in exchange for payment. This environment has allowed Ukrainian hackers to turn Russian desperation into an advantage for Ukrainian operational planning. The implications of this operation are significant, signaling a proactive stance towards the information battlefield in the war, where intelligence gathering is as crucial as traditional military engagements.
