LSM Readers' 'Conductor of the Year' Anita Zarāne: The Choir 'Latgale' is the Greatest Gift a Person Can Receive

Anita Zarāne, director of the choir 'Latgale' and music teacher at Daugavpils State Gymnasium, has been recognized as 'Conductor of the Year' in Latvia.

Anita Zarāne has dedicated 25 years to leading the 'Latgale' mixed choir at the Augšdaugava Culture Center 'Vārpa' and has been a music teacher for 30 years at Daugavpils State Gymnasium. Her choir 'Latgale' has a long-standing tradition of participating in the Latgale Song Festival and has been a staple in the General Song Festival for over 60 years. This year, the festival was nominated for the 'Boņuks 2025' Cultural Award, showing the significant cultural impact of choirs in the region.

Receiving the 'Conductor of the Year' title is a notable achievement for Anita, particularly as this is only the third year the award has been given out. She expressed surprise at her nomination, which came from her colleagues at the culture center, reflecting the esteem in which she is held by her peers. Despite receiving over 100 nominations this year, she humbly contemplates whether she deserves the recognition, highlighting the vibrant choral community in Latvia.

Anita attributes her success in the LSM readers' vote to the extensive network of singers and collaboration within the community. Her leadership not only fosters artistic excellence but also strengthens community bonds through music. This recognition not only brings attention to her work and the choir but also emphasizes the importance of cultural contributions in Latvia, particularly in the area of choral music, which holds great significance in the national identity.
