A military base is rising rapidly in Belarus: they see 'Oreshnik' launch vehicles there

New satellite images reveal Belarus is modernizing an old military base, possibly for the Russian missile system 'Oreshnik', raising concerns in European capitals.

Recent satellite images indicate that Belarus is significantly updating an old military base, potentially to host the Russian missile system known as 'Oreshnik'. This development has sparked alarm among European nations, worried that it could enhance Moscow's ability to select targets across the continent.

The construction is occurring at the former Kryčevo-6 military airfield in eastern Belarus, approximately 5 kilometers from the border with Russia. Observers note that preparations seem to be underway for the deployment of Russian strategic missiles at this location. The photographs, captured last week by the U.S. satellite imagery company Planet Labs, show six vehicles that correspond to the support equipment of the 'Oreshnik' system, alongside new buildings and equipment that have appeared at the site over the last few months.

'Oreshnik' is a medium-range missile system capable of carrying both nuclear and conventional warheads, with an estimated operational range of up to 5,500 kilometers. The Russian government has been actively promoting this missile, indicating that its deployment in Belarus could have significant implications for regional security and the balance of power within Europe.
