Swans Wintering in Kėdainiai Concern Residents; Municipality Assures Birds Are Well-Cared For

Residents of Kėdainiai are worried about the wintering swans, but the municipality assures that they are being properly cared for.

In Kėdainiai, Lithuania, concerns have been raised by local residents regarding swans wintering near a pedestrian bridge. The municipality has responded by stating that responsible specialists and local citizens are actively monitoring the situation and ensuring that the swans are regularly fed. Farmers in the area are also involved in providing suitable feed for the birds daily, alleviating some of the community's worries about their well-being during the harsh winter months.

Additionally, the size of the freezing hole where the swans are located has been under observation, and it currently measures about 30 square meters. After consultations with the Ministry of the Environment and naturalists, it has been decided not to enlarge the hole further due to potential disturbances from chainsaw noise that could scare the swans away. However, the local firefighters are prepared to expand the hole if its size decreases too much in the future, indicating a proactive approach to wildlife management in the area.

Naturalist Selemonas Paltanavičius has pointed out that water in the winter is not the primary food source for wild birds, as it is mainly needed for drinking. He attributes the swans' decision to remain in Kėdainiai during winter to human actions, suggesting that the community has inadvertently contributed to the swans' behavior of not migrating away during colder months, highlighting an ongoing tension between human activities and natural wildlife patterns.
