Fruit, vegetable, and seed growers can apply for support for damages caused by last year's weather
Farmers growing fruits, vegetables, and seeds can apply for financial support if their revenues fell significantly due to last year's adverse weather conditions.
Farmers in Latvia who suffered losses due to last year's weather can now apply for financial support if their total declared land area is at least 0.5 hectares and their agricultural income dropped by 20% compared to previous years. This assistance is aimed primarily at those in the fruit-growing sector, as many applicants so far have been identified as fruit growers. The program is part of a broader initiative to support farmers affected by climate change and extreme weather events.
The process for farmers begins with an assessment of their income over the last five years, which is averaged and then compared to data from 2025 to determine eligibility for support. The requirement for a 20% drop in income is intended to ensure that only those who are genuinely impacted can receive aid. New farms that may have planted fruit bushes or trees within the last five years with incomes below four thousand euros are also included in this support scheme, ensuring that emerging agricultural businesses are not excluded from receiving necessary assistance.
This initiative reflects the Latvian government’s commitment to support the agricultural sector in coping with the effects of climate change. The timely opening of applications allows farmers to seek help promptly, which is crucial for their sustainability. By providing this assistance, the government aims to mitigate the financial impact on farmers and promote resilience in the agricultural sector moving forward.
