Australia opens gold account after tense final resolution
Australia's Cooper Woods won the gold medal in men's freestyle skiing at the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics after a tie was broken using calculated scores.
Cooper Woods was awarded the gold medal in men's freestyle skiing at the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics after a closely contested final against Canada's Mikael Kingsbury. In the first round of the final, Woods achieved the best score, finishing just 1.04 points ahead of Kingsbury, who had previously won gold at the Pyeongchang Olympics.
The competition intensified in the second round with both Woods and Kingsbury scoring 83.71 points, leading to a tie-break situation where the scores from their aerial tricks were factored in. Woods scored 48.4 points for his tricks, compared to Kingsbury's 47.7 points, resulting in Woods' victory and marking a significant achievement for Australia, as he becomes the seventh Australian to win gold in the Olympics.
This win is particularly notable for the reputation of Australian freestyle skiing, as five of Australia's seven Olympic gold medals have been obtained through this discipline. Alongside this competition, Japan's Ikuma Horishima claimed the bronze medal, finishing only 0.27 points behind the top two competitors, while Sweden's Walter Wallberg, the previous gold medalist from Beijing, placed fourth and did not earn a medal.
