Graffiti ‘Kill Croat’ written on the wall of a Catholic church in BiH during Mass

A threatening graffiti message saying ‘Kill Croat’ was discovered on the wall of a Catholic church in Teslić, Bosnia and Herzegovina, shortly before the evening Mass.

The Catholic church of St. Joseph in Teslić, Bosnia and Herzegovina, was the site of a disturbing incident when graffiti reading ‘Kill Croat’ was found written on its wall just before the evening Mass. The church's parish priest, Fr. Pavo Šekerija, was informed of the graffiti on the same day, and he provided specific timing for when it was created, indicating it appeared while the congregation was present for the Rosary. The community is alarmed by this act of hate, especially in a place where interethnic and interfaith relations have traditionally been harmonious.

Mayor Milan Miličević condemned the vandalism, asserting that such actions undermine the stability and peace in the diverse town. He communicated strong support for the local community, emphasizing that hate speech and violence would not be tolerated. The church of St. Joseph has a rich history, having been established in 1922 alongside the parish of Bežlja, and serves as a significant element of the community's identity.

Witness descriptions outline that the graffiti appeared after a parishioner, Marko Pajić, noticed it upon leaving the church post-Mass. It was confirmed that the graffiti did not exist earlier in the day, as reported by another clergyman, Fr. Boris Salapić, who arrived at around 4:40 PM. This action has raised concerns regarding the rising tensions within the region, making locals more apprehensive about their safety and the potential for further incidents.
