Occupation continues to confiscate land, incursions, and arrests in the West Bank

Israeli authorities are expanding land confiscations in Sebastia, West Bank, threatening local livelihoods.

In a recent escalation in the West Bank, Israeli authorities have initiated widespread measures to confiscate land in the town of Sebastia, located northwest of Nablus. This move is viewed by locals as a precursor to establishing actual control over the area under the pretext of wanting to manage an archaeological site. The threatened area for confiscation is estimated to exceed 1,800 dunams, which includes over 6,000 olive trees, making this land crucial for more than 500 families who depend on it for their livelihood and sustenance.

Local landowner Subhi Yasin expressed to Al Jazeera that the land is integral to their identity and existence. He described their shock upon hearing of the expropriation decision through the municipality and Palestinian authorities, stating that the resulting on-the-ground measures, such as intensified military presence and closure of access roads, have prevented them from reaching or tending to their land. The uprooting of ancient olive trees, some of which are over sixty years old, is regarded as both a humanitarian and economic tragedy by the community, who emphasize that these trees outlive the occupation itself, symbolizing a deep connection to their heritage.

The situation raises significant concerns about the broader implications of these confiscations, not only for the immediate communities affected but also for the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict. As land is increasingly appropriated, the Palestinian population faces greater hardships losing both agricultural resources and their historical ties to the land, while the Israeli authorities may further entrench their claims and control over these territories, exacerbating tensions in the region.
