Does the energy sector endure harsher winters?
Paulina Grądzik confirms the safety of Poland's energy sector during extreme cold, highlighting record demands and generation levels.
In a recent discussion, Paulina Grądzik, the Deputy Director of the Department of Energy and Circular Economy, affirmed that the Polish energy sector remains secure even amidst extreme winter conditions. She noted that temperatures dropping below minus 20 degrees Celsius impacted the energy system significantly, particularly due to the record highs in both energy demand and generation. On February 3rd, Poland recorded its highest demand ever for the National Power System, exceeding 29 GW, while the generation also peaked at over 31 GW. Grądzik emphasized that conventional energy sources were primarily responsible for meeting this demand, though they were bolstered by contributions from photovoltaic sources, wind farms, and other renewable energy forms. The discussion also pointed to future considerations regarding the energy mix, as Grądzik hinted at potential changes in how energy demands will be met in upcoming years, indicating that a continued reliance on a diverse array of energy sources will be crucial for managing the challenges posed by climate conditions and energy demands.
