The Syrian Army Takes Over the Al-Tanf Base from American Forces
The Syrian Army has officially taken control of the strategic Al-Tanf base following the withdrawal of US forces after nearly a decade of their presence.
The Syrian Ministry of Defense announced that it has taken control of the Al-Tanf base, strategically located at the border intersection with Iraq and Jordan, after the withdrawal of American troops who had been stationed there for nearly ten years. A statement on X (formerly known as Twitter) confirmed that the handover was coordinated between Syrian and American officials, leading to the Syrian forces securing the base and its surrounding area.
Following the handover, Syrian army units began to deploy in the vicinity of the border junction of Syria, Iraq, and Jordan at the Al-Tanf desert. The Syrian border guard forces are slated to assume their responsibilities in the region in the coming days, indicating a shift in military presence and control in this strategically significant area. The withdrawal of US troops from Al-Tanf marks a notable change in the dynamics of military operations in the region, where the US previously had about 200 soldiers stationed at the base for surveillance and operational purposes.
Moreover, the news breaks as the Associated Press reported that the American forces have relocated to the 'Col 22' base within Jordanian territory, approximately 22 kilometers away from Al-Tanf. Throughout 2017 and 2018, the US expanded the Al-Tanf base and equipped it with surveillance balloons, which have since been removed. The ongoing changes in military control could affect regional stability and alliances, considering the complex dynamics involving Syria, Iraq, and Jordan, alongside the interests of other regional and international powers in the area.
